Proof of residency is required for work from November 1

To work in the Netherlands, refugees from Ukraine must have a residence sticker or O document from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) as of Nov. 1. With this proof of residence, you can prove that you are entitled to Temporary Protection in the Netherlands and are therefore allowed to work.

Until then, refugees from Ukraine were allowed to work in the Netherlands without a sticker or O document. The Dutch government actually wanted the proof of residence to be mandatory earlier. That date got pushed back because the stickers could not be delivered temporarily.

You can still make an appointment to pick up a proof of residency through Oct. 31. This can be done in one of the following cities:

  • Amsterdam (Noord-Holland)

  • Rotterdam (Zuid-Holland)

  • Assen (Drenthe)

It is also possible to pick up proof of residency after October 31. But if you are currently working, it is important that you have an O document or sticker before then.

Please note: if you do not yet have a job, you can get (part of) your travel expenses for collecting your proof of residence reimbursed. Apply for this at the municipality in which you reside.

The way travel expenses are reimbursed and whether travel expenses are fully reimbursed varies by municipality. For example, you may be reimbursed per kilometer, or the cost of public transportation might be covered.
