This is how health care works in the Netherlands

Do you want to know how health care in the Netherlands works? View this information sheet in Ukrainian. You can also watch these five short videos of Rijnmondveilig about care from the general practitioner, oral care and more. These videos are collected in a convenient playlist and are spoken in Ukrainian. The videos can be viewed with Ukrainian subtitles or with Dutch subtitles.

Free interpreters at healthcare facilities

If you have an appointment at the doctor's office, the doctor can use an interpreter service without any charge. An interpreter helps you to communicate better with your health care provider. Always indicate in advance if you want to use an interpreter.

The health care provider can engage the interpreter through bureau Acolad or Global Tolk. It is important to indicate this when you make the appointment. The healthcare provider will then make the appointment with the interpreter. You do not have to do this yourself. Huisarts (General Practitioner)

In the Netherlands, you should always visit a GP first if you have health problems. This also applies if you are pregnant, need medical advice or have psychological problems, such as sleeping problems, fears or long-term depression. If you have a cold, for example, you don't need to see your doctor right away. You can get medicine at the pharmacy. If the cold does not go away, you can make an appointment with the GP. You will have a consultation with the family doctor. The GP will then examine your health problems and determine whether you need to be referred to specialist care, usually to a hospital.

Don't know how to get to a GP? Ask the municipality where you live where the nearest GP is. On the website of Huisarts voor Vluchteling (Gp for a refugee) there are a number of general practitioners' offices where you can go for open consultations. Medicines & pharmacy

In the Netherlands you can go to the pharmacy for different purposes. For example for picking up medication that the general practitioner has prescribed. You can also go to the pharmacy for questions about a medicine. In addition, the pharmacist can give advice about mild health issues. Do you need medication? The following websites can help you:

Infectious diseases, vaccinations & population screenings

Are you a refugee from Ukraine and do you need information about infectious diseases, tuberculosis, vaccinations or population screening? Then visit the RIVM website below. Have you registered in the municipality where you reside? If so, you may receive an invitation for a population screening. You can also find more information about this on the RIVM website.
