Fireworks in the Netherlands
On December 31, the old year is ended and the new year is welcomed with fireworks in the Netherlands. In the weeks, and sometimes months, before, illegal fireworks are set off. On New Year's Eve, there are fireworks shows throughout the country. Be prepared for noise disturbance from fireworks.
On December 31, people in most municipalities are allowed to set off fireworks themselves between 6 p. m. and 2 a. m. Fireworks cause inconvenience to bystanders and neighbors in a variety of ways, especially in the weeks leading up to New Year's Eve. Keep in mind that you can already hear many fireworks popping in the streets.
Municipalities provide information on the safe setting off of fireworks. For example, always put on safety glasses, use a lighting fuse and keep enough distance. Do not light fireworks if you have no experience with it. There is a ban on heavier banging and decorative fireworks. There are also stricter controls on illegally shipping fireworks and stricter controls at national borders.
This year there is no blanket ban on fireworks. However, in some municipalities it is prohibited to set off fireworks yourself. Check your municipality's website to see if you are allowed to set off fireworks. Fireworks are often still set off in municipalities with a fireworks ban. This is prohibited and you can be fined.
