Are you going to work more or less? Or will you stop working for money? Then there are a few important things to arrange. In this article you can read about what you can arrange if your work situation changes.
Your contract from work is not renewed
Did you have a temporary contract and your contract is not renewed? Then you can probably apply for benefits. This is what you need to arrange:
Apply for unemployment benefits if you have worked for more than 6 months in a row
Have you been working for the past 6 months or more? Then apply for an unemployment benefit from the UWV. This temporary benefit will help you supplement your income while you look for new work.
Apply for welfare benefits if you have worked for less than 6 months
Have you worked for less than 6 months or are you only working a few hours a week? Then apply for welfare benefits at the municipality.
Check your allowances and adjust them
Merging your income may affect the amount of your alloances such as rental allowance and healthcare allowance. It is therefore important to inform the Dutch tax authorities that you are going to live together. The Dutch tax authorities will then calculate for you whether and how many allowances you will still receive.
Arrange your retirement
If you do not have a job, you will not build up a pension. Consider making voluntary retirement contributions or find other ways to save for retirement.
You received welfare benefits and start working
Do you get welfare benefits, but find new work? If so, make the following arrangements:
Report your new work to the municipality
Report your new job to the municipality immediately. They will adjust or stop your benefits, depending on your new income.
Some municipalities still allow you to receive (partial) assistance during a trial period of your new job. Find out if this applies to your municipality.

You retire
When you retire, you need to take care of the following:
Apply for state pension in good time
Are you close to the retirement age? Then apply in time for your state pension from the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB). In 2024, the retirement age will be 67. You can often apply for your state pension a few months in advance. That way you know for sure that you will receive the benefit on time.
Arrange your pension benefit
Have you worked for an employer in the Netherlands? Then you are entitled to supplementary pension from the retirement age of 67. Contact your pension fund to arrange your pension benefit. Discuss your options, such as a full or partial payout, and get a calculation of how much you will receive. Make sure you know when payouts start and what choices you have for the form of your pension.
