Free online Dutch language course on 10 August, organised by the University of Groningen

Would you like to learn Dutch, but have no previous experience of the language? The University of Groningen’s free online course ‘Introduction to Dutch’ starts on 10 August 2026. The course is taught in English and is designed specifically for beginners.

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at beginners who want to learn Dutch. You do not need any prior knowledge of the Dutch language. The course is useful if you live in the Netherlands, or if you want to study or work here.

What will you learn?


This course introduces you to simple Dutch words and phrases. For example, you will learn:

* To introduce yourself.

* To have simple conversations about family, friends, work and studies.

* To use short Dutch sentences in everyday life.

* Dutch words, greetings, numbers, spelling and grammar.

* To understand more about life in the Netherlands.


Why should you participate?

This course will help you take your first steps in learning Dutch. You will learn at your own pace and practise using examples from everyday life.

The course is online. So you can study at home, at a time that suits you.

Practical information

  • * Start date: 10 August 2026.

    * The course lasts for 3 weeks.

    * You will take the course independently in your own time.

    * The course takes about 3 hours a week.

    * The course is 100 percent online.

    * Course language: English.

    * The course was developed by the Language Centre at the University of Groningen.

    * To take the course, you must register via FutureLearn

    * The course is free if you opt for limited access. You will then have access to the course for 3 weeks.

    Would you like extended access or a certificate? If so, you may have to pay.

    Please note: this free course runs on a regular basis. If you are unable to start on 10 August 2026, you can join a later session. The course also starts on 16 November 2026.
