You will have one interview with the IND if you are registered in another European country

Last updated: 13/07/2026, 12:00

After your application in Ter Apel or at Schiphol, you will have one interview with the IND. This interview is about your previous asylum application in another European country.

During this interview, the IND will ask you questions to determine which country should process your asylum application

You may well have lodged your asylum application in the Netherlands for the first time, but there are reasons why the IND still believes that another country should process your asylum application. This is the case, for example, if you entered Europe illegally. The IND will then want to know how you travelled to the Netherlands if you are not registered in another country.

It may also be the case that you have, or had, a

in another country. Or that you have family members in another European country. The IND will then want to know more about this and may ask that country to take over your asylum application. During your interview with the IND, you can explain how you feel about another country processing your application, and why you believe the Netherlands should handle it.

An interpreter will be present at your interview with the IND to translate the questions asked by the IND employee for you. The interpreter does not work for the IND and cannot help you with your asylum application. The interpreter is independent and will only translate the IND’s questions for you. If you cannot understand the interpreter properly, please say so at the start of the interview. It is important that you understand him or her clearly.

Your children can express their views in a letter or by attending the interview

Have you come to the Netherlands with children under the age of 18? If they are over 12 years old, they are also allowed to give their views in a letter or during your interview with the IND.

Did you travel to the Netherlands as a child, without your parents or a guardian? If so, you will be given your own interview with the IND once you feel well enough.

Summary and recording of the interview

At the end of the interview, the IND officer will read out a summary of the conversation. The interpreter will translate this. You can then immediately point out any errors or provide additional information. The interview with the IND is also recorded. Your lawyer can listen to the recording.
