Applying for a permanent residence permit from the IND

If you want to apply for a permanent residence permit, you can do so from 3 months before the residence permit you have expires. You submit the application online or by post to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

If you have already extended your residence permit and have you been living in the Netherlands with a residence permit for more than 5 years, you can choose when to apply. You do not have to wait until your residence permit is about to expire.

Follow these steps to apply for a permanent residence permit by post.

  • Download the application form from the IND website. You will find the corresponding link below this step-by-step plan.

  • Print the form on A4 paper and full size.

  • Fill in the form. Do this using a pen with black or blue ink. Otherwise, the IND may not be able to scan your information properly.

  • Only write in the space provided behind or below each question. If you need more space, add a separate page where you include your personal information and indicate which question the added text relates to.

  • The form consists of several attachments. Which attachments you need to fill out depends on your situation.

  • Do not submit your application until you have completed the form, signed it and collected all the requested documents and supporting documents. If your application is not complete, the IND cannot properly assess your application. Do not send your original documents to the IND, only copies.

  • Send your application to the following address: Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst

  • Once the IND receives your application, you will receive a letter telling you the amount you need to pay and how to pay. Pay on time or your application may take longer.

Provide accurate information to the IND

If you provide incorrect information to the IND, your application may be rejected or your permit revoked by the IND. This also applies if you withhold information. Therefore, make sure you provide accurate and complete information to the IND.
