A bank account is very important in the Netherlands. You get your salary or benefits on it, pay your bills with it and can use it to store online. In this article you can read how to open a bank account and what to look out for.

To open a bank account, you need the following documents:

  • A valid proof of identity: this can be a passport, driver's licence or identity card.

There are different types of banks

There are many different banks in the Netherlands. Each with their own conditions and advantages. Below you can read about the difference between traditional banks and online banks:

Traditional banks:

  • Offer many different services, including current accounts, savings accounts, mortgages, loans and investments.

  • Have an extensive network of physical branches and cash machines.

Examples: ABN AMRO, ING, Triodos, Rabobank, De Volksbank (SNS Bank, ASN Bank, RegioBank).

Online banks:

  • Offer their services online and have no physical branches.

  • Often have lower fees than traditional banks.

Examples: Bunq, Revolut, N26.

Which bank is best for you is up to you alone to decide. You can pay attention to:

  • The monthly cost of your bank account.The cost of a bank account varies by bank. There are free accounts, but there are also accounts for which you pay monthly fees.

  • What features do you want.Do you want to open savings accounts? Or a credit card? The options vary by bank.

  • What the bank invests in. Banks invest a lot of money. Some banks invest a lot in sustainability, animal welfare and human rights. Other banks, on the other hand, invest a lot in weapons or fossil fuels.

  • How much interest is. Interest is a fee you get from the bank for the money you have in your account. Or the amount you have to pay when you borrow money from the bank. Whether and how much interest you get or have to pay varies by bank. Typically, you get more interest on a savings account than on a current account.

You can open a bank account online or through a bank branch. This usually requires an appointment. To prevent money laundering, you must identify yourself at the bank. This can sometimes be done via video chat or by uploading a copy of your ID.
