Set your clock back and enjoy 1 extra hour of sleep due to winter time
Winter time begins on the night of Saturday, 26 October to Sunday, 27 October 2024. Then the clock in the Netherlands will go back 1 hour. This will allow you to sleep longer that weekend. In this article you will find everything you need to know about winter time.
The time changes twice each year
In the Netherlands, we have had a difference between summer time and winter time since 1977, as in most other European countries. Every year we change the clocks twice:
Summer time: In March, the clock goes forward 1 hour.
Winter time: In October, the clock goes back 1 hour.
When summer time or winter time begins, you have to change the clock yourself. The time on your smartphone and laptop usually changes automatically when connected to the internet.
You can sleep 1 hour longer because of winter time
On the night of Saturday, 26 October, to Sunday, 27 October, the clock goes back 1 hour. You can therefore sleep 1 hour longer. At 03:00 the clock goes back to 02:00.
When the clock goes back, it is light earlier in the morning. This is good for people who get up early, such as children going to school and people working. But it also gets dark earlier in the evening.
Winter time is actually the standard time
In winter, we use standard time. It used to be always winter time. Summer time was invented to save energy. By changing the clock, it stays light longer at night. That saves a lot of energy because you do not have to have the lights on as long.
Summer time will resume in March 2025
On the night of Saturday, 29 March to Sunday, 30 March 2025, winter time ends. On that weekend, we go back to summer time and the clock goes forward 1 hour again.
