On 2 February, the Dutch government issued a new official report on Syria. According to this official report, the situation in Syria has been unstable and violent in recent months, with violence specifically targeting minorities on a number of occasions. Read more about the official report in this article.

Official report calls Syria one of the world's least peaceful countries

The

of 2 February shows that the situation in Syria is unstable. In 2025 violence specifically targeted minorities, such as the Druze and Alawites. The report also states that there are strong feelings of revenge in Syrian society and that attacks have been claimed by ISIS. This regularly leads to violence.

The new official report says the country has a humanitarian crisis, major social and economic problems and tensions in several regions. The extreme fighting that has broken out in recent weeks between government forces and Kurdish fighters is not addressed in the official report. As the official report only covers the period May-December 2025.

75 percent of processed asylum applications have been rejected recently The new official report discusses the period from May to December 2025. The previous official report was published in May 2025. After that official report, the Dutch government decided to resume processing asylum applications from Syrians.

Figures from the Dutch Ministry of Asylum and Migration show that most asylum applications by Syrians have been rejected since that time. The figure is about 75 percent. Asylum applications of minorities from Syria are also rejected. These rejections were made based on the information from the May 2025 official report. Currently, 19,000 Syrians in the Netherlands are still waiting for a decision on their asylum applications.

Will the policy now be changed? We do not yet know what the new official report means for the processing of asylum requests by Syrians. The minister will indicate whether the policy will be adjusted by the new official report. The policy will be adjusted in the coming months anyway.

thinks that the
should take the current security situation in Syria into account when making decisions. VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN) also believes that minorities, such as the Alawites, Druze and Kurds, should receive better protection within Dutch asylum policy. According to VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN), forced return to Syria is out of the question at this time. The security situation is too unstable for that.

We will announce on RefugeeHelp as soon as it is known how the asylum policy for Syria will be amended.
