Widespread unrest in the Netherlands due to violent demonstrations

Over the past few weeks, there have been demonstrations in various parts of the Netherlands against the reception of asylum seekers. These demonstrations often got out of hand. Windows were smashed, fires were started and violence was used against the police. Perhaps you have heard about them. Perhaps not. In the Netherlands, the police always take firm action at demonstrations where violence is used. This can feel unsettling or unsafe.
You are allowed to demonstrate in the Netherlands, but it must be done peacefully
Everyone in the Netherlands has the right to demonstrate. This is written in the Dutch Constitution. It falls under the freedom of expression. In the Netherlands, it is important that you are able to express your opinion. After all, you do not have to agree with everything.
You do not need to obtain permission from the municipality where you intend to demonstrate. However, you must notify the municipality (the mayor) that you are going to demonstrate. The mayor can then ensure that the demonstration proceeds safely. For example, because streets may need to be cordoned off. But also if the mayor anticipates that violence may be used. In that case, the police will be deployed.
If you are going to demonstrate on your own, you do not need to notify the mayor.
But not everything is permitted at a demonstration. The right to demonstrate only applies to peaceful protests. No violence may be used, nor may there be any incitement to discrimination or violence. However, sometimes a demonstration starts peacefully, but a small group resorts to violence. Or people who do use violence join the demonstration. When that happens, things get out of hand and the police intervene.
This can be dangerous and might scare you. You will want to know what the best course of action is.
