What you need to know when you go on holiday

Published at: 04/08/2023, 00:00

Summer has begun and if you are covered by the Temporary Protection Directive, you can go on holiday within Europe. If you are planning to go on holiday outside the Netherlands this summer, make sure you bring the right documents. And that you are aware of the rules of the country you are going to.

On holiday within the European Union with a valid Ukrainian passport

With a valid Ukrainian biometric passport and proof of residence, you may travel within the European Union (EU). This means you can show while you are abroad that you have protection in the Netherlands. You can also travel back and forth to Ukraine with these documents.

Sometimes the IND will give you a pass as proof of residence. This does not replace a passport. You cannot travel with it; this pass is not a travel document. You need a passport and the pass to travel.

It is different for each EU country how long you can remain there. There is no general rule for this. Check first with the country you want to travel to. You can look it up on the government website or at the embassy.

On holiday within the free period within the European Union

Travelling to EU countries is also possible if you are still in your

free period
. You are then allowed a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period in the European Union (EU).

If your free term ended and you do not have proof of residence yet, you will be going on holiday at your own risk. You may then not be able to enter the Netherlands when you return from your holiday. The IND does not issue a return visa (TKV) to travel back to the Netherlands. You cannot make an appointment for a TKV with the IND. Travelling outside the EU is also at your own risk, and you will not get a TKV for this, even if you have proof of residence.

Travelling without a Ukrainian passport

If you do not have Ukrainian citizenship, travel inside and outside the EU is at your own risk. The IND does not issue a return visa (TKV) or entry visa for return to the Netherlands. You cannot make an appointment for a TKV with the IND. Not even if you have proof of residence.

If you want to travel at your own risk, you need a valid international passport and a valid visa for the European Union. If you are staying in a GOO, let us know that you will be travelling and when you will return. You might not have a place in the same GOO when you return.

No right to protection after visiting country of origin

If you do not have Ukrainian citizenship and have been in your country of origin after 23 February 2022, you no longer meet the conditions of the Temporary Protection Directive. Your right of residence in the Netherlands may then be terminated.
