All children attending primary and secondary schools are off during this period. Most people who work are only off on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and 1 January. Christmas Eve is not an official holiday
Christmas Eve is not an official holiday in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, special church services take place on Christmas Eve. This is because Dutch Christians believe that Jesus was born on the night of 24-25 December. Anyone who wants to can attend church. New Year's Eve is celebrated on 31 December and 1 January

Most Dutch people celebrate this party with friends and family. This can be at someone's home. Or a party in the city or village where you live. People often play games with each other in the evening. They often eat typical Dutch snacks like "oliebollen" and "appelflappen".
Just before the turn of the year, people often count down to the New Year. You can see this on television. On television there is a big clock counting down to midnight. At exactly 00:00, people wish each other a Happy New Year and toast with champagne. Then they often go outside to set off fireworks. It is customary to wish other people outside a Happy New Year.
