Last updated: 27/11/2025, 09:40

If you want to study or work in the Netherlands, sometimes you need a diploma evaluation. In this article you will read how to have your Ukrainian diploma evaluated in the Netherlands.

You live in the Netherlands and study online at a Ukrainian university

More and more Ukrainian students are living in the Netherlands, but are still pursuing their education remotely at a university in Ukraine. If you later want to study or work in the Netherlands with this diploma, a diploma evaluation from the

may sometimes be necessary.

Why is a diploma evaluation important?

With a diploma evaluation, you can prove what level your education is approximately in the Netherlands (for example, comparable to HBO or university). This helps Dutch colleges or employers better understand your degree. It is an advice from IDW, not an official proof of recognition or admission.

Important to know about online education

Diplomas obtained through online education are valued in the same way as normal diplomas. The only condition is that the programme and the university are officially recognised by the Ukrainian government. The Dutch programme itself decides whether you will be admitted. You can ask the programme in advance. They can explain what documents you need to show and whether a diploma evaluation is necessary.

What do you need to do?

Check with the Dutch colleage where you want to study or with your employer to see if they require a diploma evaluation.

  1. Do they? Then create an account on Mijn IDW.

  2. Complete the form, upload your documents and pay for the application. An application costs €148.83 (including VAT). You pay online via iDEAL, PayPal or credit card. One diploma is evaluted per application.

  3. After the check, you will receive a link via email to download the evaluation as a PDF with digital signature.

A diploma evaluation lasts a maximum of 4 months.

What documents do you need?

  • A copy of your diploma.

  • A transcript of grades or a diploma.

  • A copy of your passport, identity card or TPD sticker.

  • An approved translation (if your documents are not in Dutch, English, German or French).

For Ukrainian diplomas, IDW usually requires additional files:

Please note:A diploma evaluation is not always required. If you just want to know the approximate level you are at, you can also seek advice from the

or your Dutch college.

You did part of your studies in Ukraine and want to continue your studies in the Netherlands

Maybe you want to continue your studies here at a college or university in the Netherlands, if you have not completed your studies in Ukraine. You can.

Who decides on your admission?

The Dutch educational institution itself decides whether to admit you, in which year you can enter and whether you will receive exemptions. Have you not completed a degree in Ukraine but have completed at least one year? If so,

or
can make a separate evaluation. You will then receive an education evaluation with approximately the same information as a diploma evaluation. An education evaluation contains approximately the same information as a diploma evaluation. If you cannot show all the documents, you can ask IDW for an indication of educational level. Do you want to continue your studies? Contact the Dutch programme as well. Most institutions give free advice on the level of your diploma.

What steps can you take if you want to continue your studies in the Netherlands?

  1. Contact the International Office of the college you want to attend. Explain what courses you took in Ukraine and show proof of obtained

    or hours.

  2. Ask if the college needs additional information from IDW. If they want it, you can request a diploma evoluation or an indication of educational level.

  3. Include as many official documents as possible with your application (transcripts, hours, grades, statements from your university).

  4. The college will then decide if and how you can enter.

Important to know:

  • IDW only evaluates official diplomas.

  • If you only did some years of study in Ukraine, the decision is always up to the Dutch college.

  • An indication of educational level from IDW can help you better demonstrate your knowledge and level.

Difference between diploma evaluation for study and work

A diploma evaluation looks the same, but its use is different for study and work.

For studies, the Dutch college determines whether you will be admitted and what additional steps are required (e.g. improve language level or take a

). In this regard, a degree evaluation is a recommendation, not a right of admission.

For work, a diploma evaluation is usually not required, except in certain occupations. However, an employer may ask for it to better understand your level.

Some professions (such as healthcare or education) may have separate rules. More information is available on the IDW website.
