Published at: 29/06/2026, 08:00

The Dutch government believes that the European Union will extend the Temporary Protection Directive by one year. In this article, you can find out what this means for you and how you can prepare.

TPD is likely to be extended by a year

Ukrainians are allowed to remain in the Netherlands under the European

is likely to make a decision on the extension in July 2026. The Dutch
is in favour of this extension. We therefore believe that this extension will go ahead.

Further information will be posted on RefugeeHelp as soon as this decision has been officially taken.

The Dutch government wants to continue helping Ukrainians

The Dutch

wishes to continue providing protection to Ukrainians. The government also wants to help people who return to Ukraine voluntarily. Whilst they are in the Netherlands, the government wants them to participate in society as much as possible. For example, by working or following a course of study.

What will be happening at the reception centres in the coming period?

Together with the municipalities, the government aims to arrange more places in reception centres and improve the organisation of reception locations. Measures will also be introduced to prevent and tackle disturbances at reception locations.

People who are no longer entitled to temporary protection are no longer permitted to live in

From 1 August 2026, the government will increase the living allowance, the meal allowance and the personal contribution towards food and drink. This is due to the rising cost of living in the Netherlands and Europe (inflation).

No TPD if you already have, or have had, TPD in another EU country

From 15 June 2026, the

will reject new applications for temporary protection if the applicant has already been granted such protection in another EU country. This rule does not apply to people who already have temporary protection in the Netherlands. Read more about this in this article.

What happens after the TPD?

The government has drawn up plans for the period following the TPD. People who wish to remain in the Netherlands may be able to obtain a standard residence permit, for example to work or study.

If that is not possible, the government intends to issue a

. The transition document is a standard 3-year residence permit. It is intended as a transitional period until a possible return to Ukraine, once it is safe and feasible to do so. The government’s aim in doing this is to:

  • Make a valid residence permit possible after 2027.

  • Provide clarity about the coming years.

  • Bring it into line with current Dutch asylum procedures.

  • Help Ukrainians to continue working and participating in society.

Please note: the plans regarding the rights and obligations set out in the transition document are not yet final.

There is still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the transition document

Many Ukrainians have questions about their future in the Netherlands. They want to know how they can prepare for the arrival of the

. Nothing is known about this at present. It is therefore not possible to answer those questions at this stage.

This situation is giving rise to many questions, rumours and uncertainty. And people are taking advantage of this. There are currently scammers active on social media who claim they can offer you advice on the transition document in return for payment. Beware of this sort of scammer.

What can you do now to prepare for the changes?

  • Do not cancel your temporary protection (TPD)

Are you currently entitled to temporary protection under the TPD? If so, do not cancel it. The TPD will soon be a prerequisite for applying for a transition document.

  • Make sure you apply for a DigiD

A lot of things are going to change in the near future. That is why it is important that you have a

With a DigiD, you also get access to Mijn Berichtenbox

You apply for a DigiD online. You will then receive the activation code by post. That is why it is important that your address details are correct.

You can check which address the government has on file. Ask your municipality which address you are registered at in the
