In the Netherlands, there are various places where you can get free or low-cost legal advice. You can go there with questions about, for example, work or housing. Below you can find out where to get help.

Do you have a legal question, or a question about residency rights, the TPD, housing or work? Then make an online appointment with a member of staff at VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN).

Het Juridisch Loket

provides free legal advice on everyday legal issues. Legal issues are matters relating to laws and regulations. You can ask questions there about, for example:

  • Work

  • Problems with your landlord

  • Debts

  • Benefits

  • Family matters, such as divorce or

. Het Juridisch Loket explains your rights and obligations. They offer advice on the best course of action. Sometimes they refer you to an affordable lawyer.

Het Juridisch Loket can also assist you in languages other than Dutch. If you prefer to speak another language, please let us know when you get in touch.

If you have a legal problem, you can also find a lawyer yourself, but you will have to pay for this. If you cannot afford the lawyer, the government will sometimes contribute towards the costs. This is known as legal aid.

You will still have to pay a personal contribution.

In some municipalities, you can also visit a legal advice centre. There, you can get free legal advice and information.

Legal advice centres are often staffed by volunteers, usually law students. They can help you with simple legal queries.

You can check the website of the Dutch association of legal advice centres to see if there is a legal advice centre near you.

There are scammers out there who claim they can find you a home for 200 euros. That is not true. These ‘legal advisers’ cannot help you find a home,; they are taking advantage of your situation.

Are you unhappy with the advice or assistance you have received? Or do you feel that you have not been treated fairly? If so, you should first discuss this with your lawyer, a member of staff at VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN) or Het Juridisch Loket. If you are unable to resolve the matter together, you can submit your complaint in the following ways.
